A screenshot math solver for your computer
Short answer: press Ctrl+Shift+S (⌘+Shift+S on a Mac), drag a box
around one problem on the page, and the step-by-step solution opens in the browser side panel. It works on
Windows, Mac and Chromebook, on any normal web page: Canvas, IXL, DeltaMath, Khan Academy, Google Classroom,
or a PDF open in your browser. You do not need a phone and you do not retype anything.
Most "photo math" apps assume the problem is on paper and your phone is in your hand. For online homework, the problem is already on your laptop screen. Taking a phone photo of a monitor gives you glare, moiré lines and a skewed equation. A screenshot is pixel-perfect, so the reading step almost never fails.
Three ways to start a capture
- Keyboard shortcut.
Ctrl+Shift+S/⌘+Shift+Sin Chrome and Edge,Ctrl+Shift+M/⌘+Shift+Min Firefox. You can change it on your browser's extension shortcuts page. - Right-click. Right-click anywhere on the page and choose Solve with Math AI. This works even if you never pinned the extension to the toolbar.
- Side panel. Click the toolbar icon (or press
Ctrl+Shift+E) and use the capture button.
Then drag a box around a single problem. Include the instruction line ("Solve for x", "Round to the nearest tenth"), because it changes the answer. The panel shows the problem as it read it, then each step with the rule it uses.
Where it works: online homework, PDFs, lecture slides
- Online homework platforms: Canvas, IXL, DeltaMath, Khan Academy, Google Classroom assignments, and any other site that shows the problem as text or an image in the page.
- PDF worksheets open in a browser tab, for example in Canvas's or Google Drive's file viewer.
- Slides and videos: Google Slides, a lecture deck, or a paused YouTube frame with the equation on the board.
- Digital textbooks that open in a browser tab.
It does not work on pages the browser protects: chrome:// settings pages, the Chrome Web Store, and
files opened straight from your disk (the address starts with file://). For a PDF or image saved on
your computer, upload it to Google Drive and open it there.
Photo math for a computer, without the phone
If you searched for "photo math for computer" or a "picture math solver" for your laptop, this is the same idea moved to where the problem actually is. Photomath has no desktop version, so the usual workaround is to point a phone at the screen. A screenshot skips that step. (More on that in why Photomath does not work on desktop.)
Have a photo instead of a screen, such as a textbook page or handwritten notes? See the math scanner guide for which pictures read well and how to get one onto your computer, or the handwriting math solver for notebook pages.
Use it to check your work, not to skip it
On graded online homework, the most useful screenshot is of your own answer. Work the problem, then capture it and compare. When your answer differs, the steps show you which line went wrong. That is the math checker workflow. Follow your school's rules for quizzes and tests.
Honest limits
- One problem per capture. A box around a whole page of problems solves whichever one it picks.
- Diagrams. Graphs and geometry figures are harder than equations. If the answer depends on the figure, include the given values in the box.
- Browsers. Chrome, Edge and Firefox on desktop and Chromebook. Safari and phones are not supported.
- Free plan. 20 free solves with a free account, no credit card. Paid plans add more each month.
FAQ
Does the screenshot math solver work on a Chromebook?
Yes. It is a Chrome extension, so it runs on ChromeOS the same way as on Windows and Mac. School-managed Chromebooks can block extension installs; that is a setting your school controls.
Do I have to save the screenshot first?
No. You drag a box on the page and the extension captures that area itself. Nothing is saved to your downloads.
Can it read a PDF?
Yes, when the PDF is open in a browser tab, such as in Canvas or Google Drive. Capture one problem at a time.
How does it turn a screenshot into math?
A vision model reads the image into math notation, then the problem is solved step by step. The full pipeline is in how screenshot math solving works.
