How to check your math homework
Short answer: finish the problem set first, photograph a page of your actual working — not just the boxed answers — and ask for verification rather than a solution. A step-level check names the first line that stops following from the one above it, which is the only feedback that changes your next score. Twenty checks are free and no account is needed to start.
Checking is a different job from solving, and the order matters. If you ask for the answer first, you have nothing left to check and you have learned nothing. If you do the work first, the check tells you whether your method holds — and on graded homework the method is where most of the marks live.
Why the final answer is the wrong thing to check
Almost every "homework answer checker" compares one number against one number. That misses the two cases that actually cost marks:
- Right answer, broken working. Two sign errors that cancel out give the correct final number off invalid algebra. A graded rubric takes those marks anyway, and you will repeat the error on the test where the numbers don't happen to cancel.
- Wrong answer, sound method. One arithmetic slip on line 6 of a nine-line problem. Knowing "wrong" tells you nothing useful; knowing "line 6 subtracted in the wrong order" takes thirty seconds to fix.
Math.Photos checks line by line and reports the first line that does not follow from the previous one, plus the rule that was skipped.
Checking homework with no answer key
Most homework ships without one, and the odd-numbered answers in the back of the textbook cover maybe half the set — never the ones the teacher assigned. Working backwards from a known answer is also weaker practice than it feels, because you stop at the first line that reaches the target instead of checking the reasoning. The full method is in how to check math answers without an answer key, including the substitution and estimation checks that need no tool at all.

Platforms with limited submission attempts are where checking pays for itself. Capture the problem straight from the browser tab, do the work, check it, and only then submit — instead of spending an attempt to find out. No phone, no retyping, and the capture keeps the original numbers so a transposed digit can't sneak in.
What gets verified
- Arithmetic and sign handling — the dropped negative, the subtraction run backwards.
- Whether each line follows from the last — the actual definition of valid working.
- Exponent and fraction scope —
-3²vs(-3)², how far the bar reached. - Transcription drift — the coefficient that changed between line 4 and line 5.
- Answer form — exact radical vs decimal, simplified vs unsimplified, units included.
Handwritten homework
Most homework that needs checking is handwritten, which is why this is a photo tool rather than a text box — retyping your work silently corrects the very error you were hunting for. See solving handwritten math from a photo for the photo technique that makes recognition reliable, and how to read handwritten math for the character pairs that collide most often.
Is checking your homework cheating?
Checking work you already did is what the answers in the back of the textbook are for. The difference here is that you also get told why a line broke. Teach Me mode goes further and asks you questions that lead to the fix rather than handing it over. If a specific assignment bars outside tools, that rule still applies — use it on practice sets.
