Data We Collect
Math.Photos ("the Extension") collects the following data to provide and improve its math-solving service:
Screenshots you capture
When you use the capture tool, the selected region of your screen is sent to our backend server, which forwards it to OpenAI or Anthropic for AI-powered math solving. Captured images are retained on our servers for up to 30 days for quality and debugging purposes, then permanently deleted. OpenAI processes images under their data usage policies and Anthropic under their privacy policy; neither provider uses API inputs for model training.
Account information
If you create an account, we collect your email address and password. Authentication is handled entirely by Supabase Auth — your password is sent directly to Supabase, where it is hashed and stored; we never have access to your plaintext password. Your email and account data are stored in Supabase (our hosted database provider); see their privacy policy. Payment processing is handled by Stripe; we do not store credit card numbers. Stripe receives your email and payment details under their privacy policy.
Solve logs
Each time you solve a problem, we log: the solution mode (quick / step-by-step / teach-me), AI model used, response latency, token counts, estimated cost, image size (in bytes, not the image itself), education level (if you set one), and whether the solve succeeded or failed. These logs are tied to an anonymous install ID (a random identifier generated locally on your device) and, if you are signed in, your user ID.
Solution feedback
When you rate a solution (thumbs up/down), we store your rating linked to the solve log entry and your install ID.
Error and performance tracking
We use Sentry to collect crash reports, error logs, and performance traces. This includes browser type, extension version, error stack traces, and general interaction timing. Sentry does not receive your screenshots or personal information. See Sentry's privacy policy.
Website analytics
Our website (math.photos) uses Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors interact with the site — page views, sign-ups, and purchase events. Google Analytics may set cookies and collect your IP address; see Google's privacy policy. The browser extension itself does not include Google Analytics.
Uninstall feedback
If you uninstall the extension, we offer an optional feedback survey. If you choose to respond, your feedback text, selected reason, and extension version are stored.
What We Do NOT Collect
- Your browsing history or visited URLs
- Content of web pages you visit
- Personal files or documents
- Data from other tabs or windows
- Any data when the extension is not actively in use
- Keystrokes or form inputs
How We Use Your Data
- Screenshots — sent to OpenAI or Anthropic solely to generate math solutions
- Solve logs — used to enforce usage limits, monitor service health, and improve solution quality
- Feedback ratings — used to measure and improve solution accuracy
- Error tracking — used to identify and fix bugs
- Account email & password — used for authentication (password managed by Supabase Auth), subscription management, and service communications
We do not sell your data. We do not use your data for advertising. We do not share your data with third parties except the service providers listed below.
Third-Party Service Providers
Your data is shared with the following providers, solely to operate the service:
- OpenAI — receives captured images to generate math solutions (privacy policy)
- Anthropic — receives captured images to generate math solutions (privacy policy)
- Supabase — hosts user accounts (email, hashed password), solve logs, and saved problems (privacy policy)
- Stripe — receives email and payment information for subscription billing (privacy policy)
- Sentry — receives error reports and performance data for crash monitoring (privacy policy)
- Google Analytics — receives website usage data on math.photos (not in the extension) (privacy policy)
Each provider processes data under their own privacy policies linked above.
Data Storage and Retention
- Captured images — deleted after 30 days
- Solve logs — retained for the lifetime of your install or account to provide usage history
- Account data — retained until you delete your account
- Feedback and ratings — retained indefinitely in anonymized form
- Error reports (Sentry) — retained per Sentry's 90-day default retention
All data is stored on servers in the United States. All communication between the extension and our servers is encrypted via HTTPS/TLS.
Data Security
All data in transit is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS. Data at rest is stored in managed databases with encryption enabled. API keys and secrets are stored in environment variables, never in client code. Access to production data is restricted to authorized personnel.
Your Rights
- Access — you can request a copy of data associated with your account or install ID
- Deletion — you can request deletion of all your data by emailing privacy@math.photos
- Portability — you can request your data in a machine-readable format
- Uninstall — uninstalling the extension stops all data collection immediately
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
